After the Last Lantern

Illustrator Aki stays behind after the lanterns are lit to sketch the canal when the crowds have gone. Julien, a visiting chef helping a friend with the celebration, is still carrying a tray of untouched pastries. Their meeting begins with a shared bench and continues into a day neither had planned: a market visit, a missed train, and the kind of conversation that feels easier with someone new. Both have meaningful lives waiting elsewhere. Rather than ask the moment to solve everything, they consider what a next step could look like—and whether they want to take it.
